Did you know that the YMCA offers a Diabetes Prevention Program that helps participants learn proven ways for healthy living? An estimated 86 million American adults have prediabetes (1 in 3 adults), yet 9 out of 10 people with prediabetes don’t know they have it. Prediabetes means a person’s blood sugar level is higher than normal, but not high enough yet to be diagnosed as diabetes. Individuals who are overweight (BMI >25), sedentary, or have a family history of diabetes may be at increased risk for developing serious health problems such as Type 2 Diabetes, stroke and heart disease. The sooner people find out they have prediabetes and take action, the better their chances of preventing Type 2 Diabetes.

Fortunately, your L.A. Y is here to help!

Our Diabetes Prevention Program is part of the Centers for Disease Control Diabetes Prevention program and is also endorsed by the Diabetes Prevention and Control Alliance. Research conducted by the National Institutes of Health has proven that programs like ours can reduce the number of cases of type 2 diabetes by almost 60%. With us by your side, you’ll receive the best possible support and advice.

Our unique program is classroom-based, led by a trained Lifestyle Coach and delivered over a 12-month period. By dividing participants into groups, you will receive personal instruction during the initial 16 weekly sessions, as well as during your follow-up monthly maintenance.

We’ll teach you ways to eat healthier, increase physical activity and how to make other changes to improve your overall health and well-being. Lifestyle changes like this can prevent or delay development of Type 2 diabetes for those at high risk.

Session Topics Include:

  • Ways to Eat Less Fat
  • Tip the Calorie Balance
  • Take Charge of What’s around you
  • Problem Solving
  • Four Keys to Healthy Eating Out
  • You Can Manage Stress
  • Ways to Stay Motivated
