Fall Prevention and Physical Activity – let’s get moving!
A Matter of Balance is for you if you’ve fallen in the past or are doing less of the things you love because you’re worried about falling. You’ll learn that falling is not an inevitable part of aging, and how simple changes to your home, management of when and how you take medications, plus increased exercise to improve strength and balance, can reduce your risk.
The Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program offers low-impact exercises and gentle activities to help increase joint flexibility and range of motion, and to help maintain muscle strength. This program was developed specifically for people with arthritis, but the workshops can also help those without arthritis.
The Arthritis Foundation Walk with Ease Program helps people create and get going on a walking plan to meet their particular needs. Learn how to stay active, manage pain and exercise safely to keep muscles strong and joints stable. The program will also help you to boost your energy, reduce stress and help control your weight.
Bingocize is a 10-week health promotion program combining bingo with fall prevention exercise and health education. Proven to increase an individual’s physical fitness and health knowledge, it is downright fun. Bingo games are twice per week for 1 hour.
EnhanceFitness helps older adults at all levels of fitness become more active, energized, and empowered to sustain independent lives. It focuses on dynamic cardiovascular exercise, strength training, balance, and flexibility to help older adults maintain health and function as they age. Participants’ progress can be measured with fitness checks as they continue through the program. Overall, it has been proven to increase strength, boost activity levels, and elevate mood.
Tai Chi for Arthritis is an effective program for people with arthritis, as it incorporates exercises that improve balance, muscular strength, flexibility, and fitness. The program is based on Sun style Tai Chi, and can be practiced standing or seated. In addition to improving balance, strength, flexibility, and fitness, Tai Chi for Arthritis has been shown to decrease pain, improve brain health, and reduce falls.
Tai Ji Quan: Moving for Better Balance (TJQMBB) is an evidence-based fall prevention program for community-dwelling older adults. The program is delivered in two 1-hour sessions each week for 24 weeks. Each session consists of warm-up exercises; core practices, which include a mix of practice of forms, variations of forms, and mini-therapeutic movements; and brief cool-down exercises.
Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL) is a strength, balance and fitness program for adults 65 and older. The entire curriculum of activities in the SAIL program can help improve strength and balance, if done regularly. SAIL is offered 3 times a week in a one hour class.
